5-MeO-DMT vs DMT: What's the Difference?

It's the most common mix-up I hear. The names are nearly identical, the molecules are close cousins, and both are short-acting tryptamines. Yet people who've experienced both often describe them as opposites.

If DMT shows you a universe, 5-MeO-DMT tends to remove the one looking.

These are typical ranges. Every person, method and dose is a little different. Chemical details for each molecule are on PubChem: 5-MeO-DMT and N,N-DMT.

Same family, different molecules

N,N-DMT (usually just called DMT) and 5-MeO-DMT share the same basic structure. 5-MeO-DMT has one small addition: a methoxy group attached at the "5" position, which is where the "5-MeO" in the name comes from.

That small change matters. Both molecules work through the brain's serotonin system, but they lean on different parts of it. DMT acts mainly on the 5-HT2A receptor, the one most linked with classic psychedelic visions. 5-MeO-DMT also acts strongly on 5-HT1A, a receptor tied more to mood and settling the nervous system. That may be part of why one tends to bring visions and the other tends to bring stillness. The science here is still young, so I hold that loosely.

What DMT is like

DMT is famously visual. People describe brilliant colours, intricate geometry, other worlds, and encounters with beings or "entities." It's often called a journey somewhere else, and many people come back with stories: places they visited, beings they met, messages they received.

Smoked, it typically lasts around 10 to 20 minutes. Taken orally in ayahuasca, it lasts several hours.

What 5-MeO-DMT is like

5-MeO-DMT is usually non-visual. Instead of going somewhere, the sense of a "somewhere" and a "someone" tends to dissolve. People describe a white light or "whiteout," boundless unity, or pure awareness without content. Many also experience strong somatic release, like shaking, heat or spontaneous movement, as the body lets go.

People often come back from DMT with a story. From 5-MeO-DMT, they more often come back with a feeling: peace, love, or a sense of having been home. I've written more about this on What Does 5-MeO-DMT Feel Like?

Where the mix-up comes from

Part of it is the names. Part of it is that both get called "DMT" for short, and both have grand nicknames: "the Spirit Molecule" for DMT, from Rick Strassman's book, and "the God Molecule" for 5-MeO-DMT. Some traditional snuffs even contain a little of both.

It matters because the experiences, and the safety considerations, are so different. If someone offers you "DMT," it's worth asking which one.

How they compare to other psychedelics

Durations are typical ranges and vary with dose, method and the person.

An important safety note: ayahuasca and MAOIs

Ayahuasca contains MAOIs, which make oral DMT active. MAOIs combined with 5-MeO-DMT can be dangerous, because the same enzyme that MAOIs block is one your body uses to clear 5-MeO-DMT. If you've recently worked with ayahuasca, Syrian rue, or take any MAOI medication, please tell me during intake. It's one of the most important things I screen for.

Why this matters when choosing

Neither is better. They're different medicines that open different doors.

If you're drawn to visions and storytelling, DMT or ayahuasca may speak to you. If you're drawn to stillness, surrender and a direct experience of unity, 5-MeO-DMT may be the medicine calling. Its short duration also means a ceremony fits into a single day, with plenty of time to land.

Both are now being studied in clinical trials, mostly for depression. You'll find plain-language summaries of the 5-MeO-DMT studies on 5-MeO-DMT Research.
