Origins of 5-MeO-DMT

5-MeO-DMT is a naturally-occurring psychedelic compound found most notably in secretions of the Colorado River toad (Incilius alvarius, formerly Bufo alvarius), as well as trace amounts in a number of plant species including Yopo seeds and Virola bark/resin.

Seeds from the Yopo tree contain trace amounts of 5-MeO-DMT alongside DMT and bufotenin. The seeds are ground into a snuff for insufflation in shamanic rituals in South America and parts of the Caribbean. Smoking and snuffing paraphernalia with residues dating as far back as 4500 years have been found at a site in Argentina. The bark and resin from Virola trees found in the Amazon also contain trace amounts of 5-MeO-DMT, alongside DMT and other tryptamines. It is used in ceremonial snuffs and pastes, often combined with other plants. Due to the relatively low concentrations of 5MeO in these plants, full breakthrough dose experiences are not possible.

There is no conclusive archaeological proof of pre-colonial psychoactive toad venom use among the Maya, Olmec, or Seri people despite the symbolic role of toads in fertility and rain iconography from these groups. If it occurred, the use of toad excretions for ceremonial purposes would have been much more limited compared to the well-documented traditions of ayahuasca in South America.

In 1983, Albert Most, under the pseudonym "Ken Nelson," published an influential pamphlet titled Bufo alvarius: The Psychedelic Toad of the Sonoran Desert. This self-published work, distributed through underground and countercultural networks, was the first widely accessible guide to the psychoactive properties of Bufo alvarius venom. The pamphlet detailed how to collect, prepare, and smoke the venom, emphasizing its rapid onset and intense mystical effects.

Effects of 5-MeO-DMT

5-MeO-DMT is considered by many to be the most potent psychedelic known to humankind. Unlike its close chemical relative N,N-DMT which typically induces vivid visual breakthroughs, entity encounters, and otherworldly realms, 5-MeO-DMT is off in its own category often producing a non-visual "whiteout" of ego dissolution, boundless unity, and somatic intensity. It is described as feeling uniquely primal, visceral, and transcendent.

There are different ways this medicine can be engaged with, each influencing the pace, depth, and quality of the journey. I work only with pure, synthesized, lab-tested 5-MeO-DMT. I do not use Bufo toad secretion. This ensures safety and respect for the natural world. Working with the synthetic molecule allows for precise consistent milligram dosing and reduces the risk of adverse reactions.

Ways of Working with the Medicine:

5-MeO-DMT can exist in different chemical forms, most commonly freebase and salt. Both contain the same molecule, but the form influences how it can be taken:

  • Freebase: vaporized and inhaled through a ceremonial walnut wood and glass pipe. Rapid onset, shorter duration, intense and immersive.

  • Salt Form: insufflated (snuffed) through an arbutus wood snuffer. Slower onset, slightly longer duration, often gentler and more grounded.

The most common method is the vaporized/smoked format, with effects at different doses summarized below:

  • Low Doses: Induce a gentle, manageable altered state. You may experience mild euphoria, a sense of calm, and subtle shifts in perception, such as enhanced emotional clarity or a feeling of connectedness. Physical sensations may include tingling, or energy flowing through the body. Some experience a major release of muscle/joint tension. The experience can feel introspective, fostering emotional release or insight without being overwhelming. Some describe this as a ‘soft’ mystical experience, with a sense of unity or spiritual awareness that feels grounding rather than disorienting. At medium ranges, this gentleness can deepen into somatic releases - such as shaking, heat, or spontaneous movement - as the body unwinds stored tension or emotional material.

  • High Doses: Produce an intense, rapid-onset experience lasting 20-45 minutes. People often describe a complete dissolution of ego, leading to a profound mystical experience characterized by a sense of unity with the universe or a "whiteout" of perceptual content. Some describe this as dissolving everything except for awareness itself. Many are left feeling reborn. In research and clinical settings, participants have reported lasting reductions in depression, anxiety, and PTSD symptoms.

“The beginning of the experience was very sudden and dramatic. I was hit by a cosmic thunderbolt of immense power that instantly shattered and dissolved my everyday reality. I lost all contact with the surrounding world, which completely disappeared as if by magic.”

– Stanislav Grof, Psychiatrist & Pioneer in Transpersonal Psychology

Risks & Safety Considerations

5-MeO-DMT and other powerful catalysts for non-ordinary states can bring very intense psychological and physical reactions. These experiences are not suitable for everyone. Potential psychological risks include overwhelming fear or panic, resurfacing of unresolved trauma, destabilization of mood (including anxiety or depression), confusion, and challenges integrating the experience into everyday life. For some people this can lead to a temporary sense of disorientation, meaninglessness, or spiritual crisis.

Physically, people may experience changes in heart rate and blood pressure, shaking or muscle tension, nausea or vomiting, loss of coordination, or, in rare cases, more serious complications. Certain medical conditions and medications can significantly increase risk. Examples include heart disease, uncontrolled high blood pressure, history of stroke or seizures, serious liver or kidney issues, pregnancy or breastfeeding, and some psychiatric conditions such as psychosis or bipolar disorder. Interactions with medications (for example some SSRIs, MAOIs, lithium and others) can also create additional risks.

For this reason, I work only with people who complete a thorough screening process and may request consultation or clearance from a healthcare professional before proceeding. Some individuals may be advised that this type of work is not appropriate for them at this time.

Nothing on this page is medical or legal advice. It is essential to discuss your health history and current medications with a qualified healthcare professional before engaging with any powerful altered states or making decisions about substance use. You remain responsible for your own choices, and I do not diagnose, treat, or cure medical or psychiatric conditions, nor do I encourage or advise anyone to break the law.
