Synthetic 5-MeO-DMT vs Toad Medicine
Many people first hear of 5-MeO-DMT as "Bufo" or "toad medicine." It's a powerful image, and it's how the medicine became widely known. But I work only with pure, synthesized, lab-tested 5-MeO-DMT. In some circles this is called "Jaguar," to set it apart from "Bufo." It's the same molecule from a different source. Here's why I choose it.
What "Bufo" actually is
The Colorado River toad (Incilius alvarius, formerly Bufo alvarius) lives in the Sonoran Desert of the southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico. Glands on its skin secrete a venom containing 5-MeO-DMT, which is dried and smoked.
That secretion doesn't contain 5-MeO-DMT alone. It's a mix: 5-MeO-DMT, bufotenin, and a range of other compounds, including some that act on the heart, in proportions that vary from toad to toad, season to season and batch to batch. Heat breaks some of those compounds down when the secretion is smoked, which is also why toad secretion can't be snuffed safely.
Why I choose synthetic
Precise dosing. With synthetic 5-MeO-DMT, I know exactly how much medicine is in each dose, down to the milligram. That lets us start low and build gradually, which is the heart of how I work. With toad secretion, two doses that look the same can be very different in strength.
Purity. Lab-tested 5-MeO-DMT is just that, without other compounds whose effects are less well understood. Fewer unknowns means fewer surprises, for your body and your experience.
Gentler options. Synthetic 5-MeO-DMT comes in different forms. The salt form can be snuffed for a slower, softer arc, which is how we work at Inward. That gentle option simply isn't available with toad secretion.
Respect for the toad. As interest in 5-MeO-DMT has grown, so has demand for toad secretion. The toad is listed as threatened in California and New Mexico, it's illegal to take one out of Arizona, and conservationists have raised concerns about poaching, the stress of repeated "milking," and pressure on wild populations that already face habitat loss. Even Ken Nelson, who as "Albert Most" wrote the 1983 pamphlet that first popularized smoking toad venom, later came to advocate for synthetic 5-MeO-DMT and for leaving the toads alone. More in the pamphlet summary.
What "lab-tested" means
Synthetic 5-MeO-DMT is only as trustworthy as its testing. The medicine I work with is tested by a third-party lab to confirm what it is and how pure it is, and I only use medicine with that confirmation. If you're comparing facilitators, "how do you know what's in it?" is one of the questions worth asking.
Isn't the toad more traditional?
It's a common belief, but there's no conclusive archaeological evidence of ancient ceremonial toad use. The modern practice largely traces back to that 1983 pamphlet. Long-standing traditions do exist for plant snuffs like Yopo and Virola, which contain small amounts of 5-MeO-DMT alongside other tryptamines.
Two of the best-known modern toad practitioners, Octavio Rettig and Gerardo Sandoval, wrote books about their methods: The Toad of Dawn and the Bufo Alvarius Medicine Codex. Both are summarized with a critical eye in the library.
Some people feel toad medicine carries a more organic or animistic quality, and I respect that. For me, the sacredness of a ceremony lives in the intention, the preparation and the care in the room, more than in where the molecule came from.
Where the names come from
"Bufo" is the toad's old genus name. "Jaguar" was popularized by the psychologist Ralph Metzner and the underground circles he wrote about, as a name for synthetic 5-MeO-DMT. "The God molecule" and "the toad" you'll hear used for both. Metzner's book, summarized.
Is synthetic 5-MeO-DMT different to experience?
The 5-MeO-DMT molecule is the same whether it comes from a lab or a toad. What changes is everything around it: the predictability of the dose, the absence of other compounds, and the ability to choose how gently to begin. Many people find that consistency is exactly what lets them relax and surrender.
